Top 5 Myths about Aging

Stay young -- Don't believe these common myths about aging.

So many myths about aging are unchallenged. These myths have been passed down from generation to generation and most of society accepts them as fact. It's true that you are only as old as you think. Think young and stay that way!

Myth #1 -- Falling comes with aging -- There's nothing I can do about it

Falling definitely goes hand-in-hand with aging, but there is plenty you can do to ensure healthy aging and prevent falls. One in every three people over the age of 65 will fall and cause a serious enough injury to require medical attention. These falls cause hip fractures and other injuries that can lead to death.
To prevent this from happening to you, do a combination of four exercises. Try aerobic, strengthening, balance and flexibility exercises for cardiovascular fitness, build muscles, improve balance, and keep you limber. A simple program that combines these exercises will greatly improve your odds against falling.

Myth #2 -- Once lost, muscle and flexibility are never regained

Untrue. Exercise has proven just as effective for elderly people as for younger generations. Muscles and ligaments respond to exercise regardless of your age. By exercising regularly, you can see great improvement in your health.

Myth #3 -- Aging means losing your teeth

Most people lose their teeth due to late stage gum disease. This is begins as gingivitis and progresses to periodontal disease. You can avoid this situation with proper education and dental care and you can keep your teeth.

Myth #4 -- I'll become senile as I age

Some age related declines in mental functioning are preventable and reversible. Scientists at Tufts University, who study the aging brain, discovered that many times vitamin deficiencies were the cause of mental issues. They discovered that low folate can cause forgetfulness, irritability and even depression. A vitamin B6 deficiency can cause tingling or numbness in hands and feet.
Senility and other common complaints that come with aging can be reduced by eating a healthy diet and taking a good multivitamin.

Myth #5 -- I will need a hearing aid

Many people expect to lose their hearing as they age, and it is true that sensory cells within your ears begin to die off causing your hearing ability to decline. However, if you protect your hearing when you are younger, chances are you will never need a hearing aid.
Only thirty-five percent of people over the age of 85 ever need a hearing aid and some people in their 90s never need one.
You can't stop aging -- it's just the course of nature. You can, however, follow this advice and debunk these myths. By doing so, you'll stay younger, longer and hold off aging as long as possib

Discover Energy You Didn't Know You Had
by Jane Powell on July 8, 2011
"Spend time alone, every day."
To be fully grounded, you need to be in touch with yourself. You need to hear and listen to your inner wisdom and nurture your inner strengths and dreams – none of which is possible when you're actively focusing on the outer world.
Every day, find a place where you can be alone for a while. Shut off outside channels and be at one with yourself.
Count back from ten, letting the outside world stresses and thoughts leave, as you exhale with each count. Breathe in deeply and let the oxygen replenish your cells and your spirit. Feel the deep relaxation and contentment available at that moment in time.
When you give yourself this time alone, you'll discover a new level of energy you didn't' know you had. You'll also find the strength to manage challenges and enjoy the rest of each day.
Your Vision

When someone's feeling low, you can help them restore their self-belief by keeping a
firm, clear vision of their goodness and what makes them special.

Increase their self value by letting your vision be drawn to the diamonds (their
Specialities), rather than any stones (their defects).
Take a gentle encouraging approach and never give up on anyone.

More or less
If you resent those who have achieved more than you, that blocks your own path to achievement. If you feel superior to those who have achieved less, your own achievements will quickly crumble.

There is more than enough of life's abundance for everyone. There is nothing to be gained by placing judgments on those who tap into more or those who tap into less of that abundance.

Every person expresses life's abundance in his or her own way. Every person is at a different point on the journey, and each journey is unique.

Choose to be inspired instead of intimidated or resentful. Focus on creating your own special manifestation of goodness and abundance.

Joyfully celebrate the good fortune of others. Graciously accept and appreciate the value that their accomplishments add to all of life.

Then envision your own next accomplishment. And with a thankful heart, bring that vision to life.

Ralph Marston

"Before you decide, review your values."
We all have wants, needs and desires. These feelings indicate what we value most. But, sometimes, wants, needs and desires come into conflict, and we must decide where to invest our time and attention.
No one can do everything at once. So, when a conflict arises, take the time to think about your long-term values before you make a decision about where to focus your energy.
Remember, when you focus on one thing, you often must let go of another (at least for the time being). Ultimately, you must go with the decision that supports your highest values, and will make you happiest, both now and in the future.
But, don't delay. Fulfillment and joy await you, after a decision is made.
©Jane Powell

Free Yourself from People Pleasing

"Give yourself permission to say, 'No.'"

As young girls, many of us were taught to always try to please people. We were told it was important to be seen as nice and non-confrontational. As a result, we went out of our way to do things that people wanted. We became people pleasers, afraid to rock the boat.

Is this still your mantra?

Recognize and appreciate that you have a right to do what's right for you. There is no need to always feel obligated to please others, at your expense.

If a friend asks you do something when you have other priorities, say "No." If the school asks you to volunteer when you'd rather enjoy lunch with friends, say "No."

Don't feel obligated to offer an excuse. Give yourself permission to say, "No!" Because a balanced life includes pleasing yourself, as well as others.

Leave the stress behind
Much of what is stressful to you is what you've decided is stressful. What if you decided differently?
Feeling stressed in certain situations, or with certain tasks, or with certain people, is not a foregone conclusion. Rather, it's a way you choose to respond.
Sure, many things in life will challenge you greatly. Yet instead of letting those challenges get to you and make you stressful, you can choose a more powerful, effective response.
Instead of seeing yourself as fighting against the challenges, you can see yourself as thriving on them, and even enjoying them. Even when people and situations are extremely difficult, you can find great fulfillment in calmly working through them.
You can let others be stressed and angry and frustrated. All the while, you can choose to be peaceful and productive.
Life's difficulties don't have to bring you down, because you have what it takes to lovingly and purposefully deal with them. Choose to respond with a positive perspective, and leave the stress behind.
 Ralph Marston
